Workshop 1: Built to Last: The Human Work Behind a Living Journey in Healthcare

In healthcare and life sciences, we do the work to understand our users. We run the interviews, the usability testing, the research, and we uncover real insight about patients, clinicians, and the people inside the system. But then, too often, that insight goes quiet. It lives in a deck, a report, or one researcher’s head; the journey it belongs to was never captured as a shared, living thing; and the next team starts over. There’s a lot of talk about tools and automation that keep journeys current, but most organisations aren’t there yet, and many don’t have a single view of their touchpoints at all. Before that’s a tooling problem, it’s a human one. Across years of service and experience design spanning life sciences and other high-stakes, regulated sectors, with Thoughtworks and as GB | Genevieve Brechel Consulting, the same pattern shows up again and again: good research goes quiet in the seams, between the insight and the decision, the study and the system, the project team and whoever inherits the work. The journeys that last have four things, and the ones that fade are always missing at least one: a findable home, a working update trigger, a named owner, and a live decision they feed. In this 150-minute working session, participants take a journey they know well (a patient pathway, a clinician workflow, a care or research process; a few touchpoints is enough, no map or tooling required) and run it against these four conditions, marking exactly where it breaks down. You’ll leave with a simple, durable framework and a clear diagnosis of where ownership and meaning need to be designed in, so the research you’ve already done keeps mattering.
